Free VPN Server Speed Checker
Test the speed and performance of your VPN connection
Test Your VPN Connection Speed
This tool measures the speed and performance of your current connection, whether you're using a VPN or not. Run the test with and without your VPN to compare performance.

Understanding VPN Speed Test Results
When using a VPN, it's normal to experience some reduction in connection speed due to the encryption and routing of your traffic through remote servers. Here's what each metric means:
Download Speed
This measures how quickly data can be transferred from the internet to your device. A good VPN should maintain at least 70-80% of your normal download speed.
- Excellent: 50+ Mbps
- Good: 20-50 Mbps
- Average: 10-20 Mbps
- Poor: <10 Mbps
Upload Speed
This measures how quickly data can be transferred from your device to the internet. Upload speeds are typically lower than download speeds.
- Excellent: 20+ Mbps
- Good: 10-20 Mbps
- Average: 5-10 Mbps
- Poor: <5 Mbps
Ping (Latency)
This measures the time it takes for data to travel from your device to a server and back. Lower ping is better, especially for gaming and video calls.
- Excellent: <50 ms
- Good: 50-100 ms
- Average: 100-150 ms
- Poor: >150 ms
Jitter
This measures the variation in ping over time. Lower jitter means a more stable connection, which is important for streaming and video calls.
- Excellent: <5 ms
- Good: 5-15 ms
- Average: 15-25 ms
- Poor: >25 ms
Factors Affecting VPN Speed
- Server Distance: The farther away the VPN server, the higher the latency and lower the speed.
- Server Load: Busy servers with many users will be slower.
- VPN Protocol: Different protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2) offer different balances of speed and security.
- Encryption Level: Stronger encryption typically results in slower speeds.
- Your Base Internet Speed: A VPN can't make your internet faster than your ISP provides.
- Network Congestion: Peak usage times can affect VPN performance.
Tips for Improving VPN Speed
- Connect to Closer Servers: Choose servers geographically closer to your actual location.
- Try Different Protocols: WireGuard is generally faster than OpenVPN.
- Use Wired Connections: Ethernet connections are more stable than Wi-Fi.
- Check Your Base Speed: Test your speed without a VPN to establish a baseline.
- Restart Your Devices: Sometimes a simple restart can improve performance.
- Try Different VPN Providers: Not all VPNs offer the same performance.
